Brands Hatch Grand Prix: The statistics
26 Jul 2010 - MCE Insurance British Superbike News
There are now just two weeks to go until the triple header round on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit and the official British Superbike Championship website brings you some fascinating facts and surprising statistics ahead of the event.

In the past ten seasons only reigning BSB champion Leon Camier has scored a complete sweep of pole positions and race wins; last year he topped qualifying before beating Broc Parkes on the Kawasaki World Superbike to three race wins.

Double wins are historically uncommon at the Kent circuit - Camier may have done it in 2009, but in the past nine years (no GP round in 2000) only former champions Gregorio Lavilla (2007) and Steve Hislop (2001) have doubled up.

The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit has always produced mixed qualifying results and since the year 2001 no rider has been able to notch up more than one pole position. Likewise the manufacturers are evenly mixed - it currently stands at four for Ducati, three for Suzuki, two for Honda and one for Yamaha.

Of the current class of BSB, only one rider has secured pole position there since 2001 and that was Yukio Kagayama in 2004 for the Crescent Suzuki team; this remains the last time the Japanese rider scored a pole position in BSB. In terms of current race winners Ryuichi Kiyonari topped the podium in 2006 and Chris Walker in 1999.

Tom Sykes enters this round as a wildcard and going on the team's previous form at the equivalent round last season he has to be one of the main contenders; Broc Parkes qualified second with team-mate Sheridan Morais in third before the Australian went on to finish second in all three races.

The past five races on the Grand Prix circuit have been won by British riders, all of whom have since moved on to the world stage including Camier, Shane Byrne and Cal Crutchlow. The last rider to win from overseas was Spaniard Gregorio Lavilla in 2007, whilst Kiyonari took the spoils for Japan in 2006, but an Australian rider hasn't topped the BSB podium at the Kent circuit; the closest was former World and British champion Troy Bayliss in 1999 when he finished second and third.
