Ryuichi Kiyonari finally conquered the Cadwell Park circuit where victory, even in his two title winning years had eluded him with a stylish performance in the opener to the fourth round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship.
The Japanese rider however was denied the opportunity of a winning double when his bike was sidelined on the warm-up lap by a technical problem ahead of the second race which was won by his HM Plant Honda team-mate Josh Brookes.
Kiyonari made the perfect start to the first race at the Lincolnshire circuit which hosts the home races for his Louth based team - he charged through from the second row to lead with Tommy Hill in hot pursuit until he crashed heavily at Hall Bends on the fourth lap, by which time Stuart Easton had tipped off his Swan Honda at Charlies.
Michael Rutter was running second to Kiyonari with Michael Laverty third while Brookes was riding hard to overcome a dreadful start. Laverty put his Relentless Suzuki into second place on the eighth lap and began to close on Kiyonari.
Briefly with a couple of laps remaining Laverty moved ahead, but Kiyonari countered to take his first victory of the season, enthusing: “For me, very special, the team’s home track, my home track. I try many times for this.
"In earlier years, the team have private tests here for me, help me a lot, but no wins, till this one," he added. "This is the perfect week for me - my baby son Koma was born six days ago, now I win the race for him and my wife Madoka."
Laverty took second from RidersMotorcycles.com Ducati rider Rutter with Tommy Bridewell fourth on the Quay Garage Honda from Brookes who was eager to make amends for that next time out.
The Aussie ran second to Laverty on the opening lap, but then charged into the lead with a breathtaking move at Hall Bends and then controlled the race from the front, taking his second victory of the season.
Hill, running fourth in the early stages, was soon upping the tempo and hounding first Rutter and then Laverty, moving into second place on lap 14, but next time around the action was red-flagged because of Dan Linfoot’s tumble going up the Mountain.
"I wanted to get out front, it is such a good feeling to there and to be pulling a gap," explained Brookes. "I made a good start, made some passes while the tyres were fresh and kept it smooth. If I’m not on the top step of the podium I get a bit annoyed, but that is the racer in me."
Brookes took the victory which closes him within 36 points of Hill in the standings but Easton lost ground in the title chase as he trailed in a distant tenth place.
Relentless Suzuki rider Laverty completed a solid day with third place ahead of Rutter while John Laverty took fifth for Buildbase Kawasaki ahead of Bridewell.
Steve Brogan riding the Jentin BMW completed a daily double in the Mirror.co.uk BSB-EVO class to move within ten points of MAR Kawasaki rider Hudson Kennaugh who took second and third places, in the latter finishing adrift of Alex Lowes who was deputising on the Redline KTM for their injured James Edmeades.
