Team Manager debriefs: Cadwell Park
31 Aug 2010 - MCE Insurance British Superbike News
The ninth round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park produced some dramatic races and mixed results for the teams and riders. Here some of the team managers reflect on the weekend's events:

HM Plant Honda
Ryuichi Kiyonari - R1: 3rd, R2: 3rd
Josh Brookes - R1: 2nd, R2: 1st

Team Manager Havier Beltran: "It was a fantastic weekend for the HM Plant Honda team; to have both riders on the podium in both of the races is always the goal and both Josh and Kiyo achieved that. Kiyo was a bit disappointed not to have won, but he has the title lead with Tommy going into the Showdown so the podiums today were vital. For Josh he was so impressive and I have never seen passes from the Mountain through to Hall Bends like he did and that win was deserved. The whole team is now looking forward to the Showdown and fighting for the championship title."

Worx Crescent Suzuki
Tommy Hill - R1: 1st, R2: 2nd
Yukio Kagayama - R1: 7th, R2: 7th

Team manager Jack Valentine: "The team are buzzing! There was so much work going into the weekend and everyone saw we've made a major breakthrough with our set-up and that really boosted Tommy's confidence. He could have had two wins but we'll never know. The important thing is we're in the strongest possible position as we head into the Showdown. The GSX-R is the best it's been all season and Tommy's got all the confidence in the world. For Yuki, it was a good weekend for him as well. Having that big crash in practice couldn't have helped him, but in the races he simply got quicker and quicker. He had to fight his way past Alastair Seeley in both races and he was mindful he needed to make a clean pass as it's so tight here, but once past his lap time was on a par with those ahead, so he's shown he's getting his pace back. There's every probability he'll be able to fulfil the support role that's needed as Tommy fights for the championship. So it's the best feeling for us. We've made the breakthrough we've been looking for and we even know that wet or dry we've a set-up that works. We won't be resting though; we're going to be pushing for more - as we're sure all the other teams will be doing!"

Swan Honda
James Ellison - R1: 6th, R2: 6th,
Stuart Easton - R1: 10th, R2: 11th

Team Manager Shaun Muir: "It was a challenging weekend for the Swan Honda team, but James had a really positive two races, even though he finished sixth in both. He had his work cut out having not raced here earlier in the year but he was determined to fight on. Stuart wasn't able to find the form this weekend that we have previously seen from him and he has struggled with settings throughout the event. The team are now looking ahead to our home race at Croft in two weeks' time."

Relentless Suzuki by TAS
Michael Laverty - R1: 4th, R2: 4th
Alastair Seeley - R1: 8th, R2: 9th

Team Principal Philip Neill: "Our objective at the start of the season to get both riders into the top six has been achieved; now we're heading into the business end of the season, but a big thanks to Suzuki, Relentless and everyone who has been part of the success story - part one. As a team we are glad to see the end of Showdown qualifying pressure, as it has been a testing time for everyone, not least the riders. As I've said before, Alastair Seeley has earned his place quite rightfully in the top six and it's a tremendous achievement for his rookie season in BSB, especially with the championship being so strong with at least ten riders capable of podiums.

"Michael probably didn't get what he wanted from Cadwell Park but his lap times in the second race showed he has the pace to run with the front men. We will now go away and see where we are and try to find those extra tenths. In saying that we have found improved performance with our GSX-R1000 and with the final three tracks better suited to our bike and riders, we should find ourselves in the mix for honours again. Only two teams have both riders in the top six and we are one of them. Suzuki can also boast fifty percent of the Showdown with three riders in it, making them the leading manufacturer. Now we will re-group as a team and come back refreshed for the 2010 season - part two."

Ridersmotorcycles.com Ducati
Michael Rutter - R1: 5th, R2: 5th

Team owner Phil Jessopp: "Michael and the team did a great job at the weekend under difficult circumstances. We've achieved exactly what we wanted from the nine-round regular season and that was to qualify for the Showdown. Michael is riding really well and the bike is flying. We know that Michael goes well at all the final three circuits and the Ducati works well at each of them so we have to be confident of our chances in the fight for the 2010 BSB title."

MSS Colchester Kawasaki
Gary Mason - R1: DNF, R2: 10th
Simon Andrews - R1: DNF, R2: DNS

Team Manager Nick Morgan: "It might not look like it but we have come away with plenty of positives from Cadwell Park! We started on such a high and it carried on through Sunday and into the races on Monday. Both riders worked hard and showed their pace and the bike is strong. We know we can run up there in the top six and the weekend showed it but we just need to piece it together - and some good luck for a change! Overall we know we're not up there in the top six of the championship for the final Showdown and we're maybe in the position now where we should have been a few rounds earlier. We'll go back to the workshop and trawl through some of the data to pick at the bones from here because there are still a few things we need to look at but we're looking forward to Croft because it's a track which suits us and we're in a good position as a team to finish the season on a high."

Quay Garage Honda
Tommy Bridewell - R1: DQ, R2: 8th

Team Owner Ian Woollacott: "I've watched the replays of the collision between Tommy and John Laverty and I honestly think it was a typical racing incident so I don't agree with the decision to exclude him. We've been on the receiving end in the past but haven't bothered kicking up a fuss as I consider that as part of racing and if Tommy hadn't got the desire to get the best result possible, he shouldn't be out there. He bounced back well in race two and that put a smile back on the whole team's faces but you live and learn and we look forward to Croft and hopefully we can get a bit of good fortune to go our way for once."

Motorpoint Yamaha
Dan Linfoot - R1: 9th, R2:13th

"It was a pretty frustrating weekend for the team; we made good progress with the bike and Dan but did not get the results we expected. Dan had a decent start in race one and got a result and then a bad start in race two and did not, it's that simple. He has to get away with the right group, he has the pace but makes it impossible from 16th on lap one! He managed to finish both races at the most difficult track in the series so that is a positive. Andrew will be back for the next race so we will be back to full strength and with the changes to the bike hopefully a strong finish to the year."

Sorrymate.com SMT Honda
Chris Walker - R1: 11th, R2: 15th

Team Owner Robin Croft: "Once again we encountered rain during free practice and for the third meeting in a row we ran out of dry set-up time. Chris is obviously an incredibly experienced rider but he's new to the team and new to the Honda and it's a learning process at each circuit albeit a quick learning process. The Suzuki he was on before and the Honda he's on now are like night and day but we made good progress in FP1 and FP2 and were confident the changes we made for FP3 would have been a major step forward. That's when the rain came though and, once again, we went into the first part of qualifying still having to make changes, which in turn, meant we went in to the race still searching for the optimum set-up.

"A brilliant start in the first race saw Chris leap up to tenth but he immediately ran in to set-up and electrical problems that ruined his race, the latter again causing major issues in race two. The problems were quite significant so I can't speak highly enough again of Chris for getting the results that he did. We all want to be finishing further forward but he rode absolutely brilliantly given the problems he was experiencing and he showed his true battling qualities. It's testament to his experience, maturity and professionalism that he was able to put in the lap times that he did and score some points. We all know that when we get the dry time we need, the results will be different so let's hope we get that at Croft and we can all show our true capabilities."

The next round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship is the first round of the Showdown at Croft on 10/11/12 September. For more information visit www.croftcircuit.co.uk or call 01325 721815.
