CAME Yamaha's James Westmoreland stole the victory in a hectic second round of the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship at Thruxton to take a 14 point lead in the title chase.
Westmoreland said: "It is a fantastic result for me and the CAME Yamaha team, I missed out at Brands Hatch and was happy to settle for a podium but I sussed it out today. There where times when I think I could have pushed harder but it was a frantic race, I couldn't believe that nobody crashed to be honest so the only place to be was in the lead. I need to thanks all of the CAME Yamaha team and my sponsors; now I just want to stay at the top of the standings."
In the early stages Westmoreland and team-mate Billy Connell duelled for supremacy but soon Graeme Gowland, riding the PTR Honda was challenging, taking the lead on the tenth lap.
Tom Grant on the East Coast Yamaha was also piling on the pressure, pushing into the top three at the expense of McConnell who was forced back to fourth after an earlier mistake at the Club Chicane when he ran wide. Meanwhile a closing Sam Lowes crashed out of contention with just five laps remaining on the GNS Racing Honda.
Westmoreland had the edge, taking the victory ahead of the determined Gowland who just held off Grant by 0.014s. McConnell took fourth ahead of Jack Kennedy and Ian Hutchinson.
