After a twelve-year stint at Peterborough's East of England Showground, the move to Lincolnshire's Showground was a big step, but given the weather conditions, nearly 14,000 bikers attended over the weekend, easily matching past performances at Peterborough. In fact, such was the last minute demand for camping on the Friday afternoon that the campsite section had to be extended twice to meet demand!
Traders reported good business on the Saturday while Danny John Jules (The Cat from TV's Red Dwarf) proved a real hit with the crowds as he and fellow Enduro Challenge star Graham Hoskins joined the club cavalcade in the main arena.
Despite the rain, many keen Moto GP fans stuck it out to watch the thrilling giant screen action from the sunny Spanish round of Moto GP while elsewhere, a decidedly damp main arena played host to the ever popular Bolddog Lings Stunt Team and the amazing tricks of ace trials rider Steve Colley. Not to be outdone, the British Lawnmower Racing Association took no notice of the weather as they churned up the grass in their championship final!
For those camping, Friday and Saturday evenings' entertainment from bands Trash Monkey, The Band from County Hell, Bad Penny, Little Black Hearts and of course, James Toseland and Crash headlining Saturday, proved a real hit.
Commenting, Martin Chick MD of the Mulberry Group, the bmf's event organisers said: "Overall I'm pleased with the way things went. It's a shame the weather turned on us on Sunday but no doubt about it, this was a good move and I'd like to thank the staff at the showground for making us so welcome and our volunteer marshals for their unstinting hard work."
