Popular biking roads speed limit reduction
There are plans across councils in the UK to reduce the speed of some of the most popular biking roads in Britain from 60mph to 40mph which according to the Department for Transport proposals is due to the number of bends and "considerable number of vulnerable road users including bikers".
Single carriage rural roads with national speed limit (60mph) contributed to 49% of all UK road deaths according to govt. statistics from 2010 (MCN.com).
Mike Penning, Road Safety Minister described suitable speed limits as "vital" to the local areas and explained that councils are better placed to establish what the speed limit of these rural roads should be based on knowledge and understanding of the community.
Not dissimilar to government plans in 2009, the new limits may also be enforced by average speed cameras in some places.
