Three men convicted for attempted insurance fraud

At Southwark Crown Court last week three men admitted deliberately causing a crash between a coach and a car in an attempt to claim £150,000 for personal injuries.

The incident which saw a coach trip to a dog track turn nasty when the coach was hit from behind by a Renault Megane. All 30 passengers on the coach put in a whiplash claim even though the driver said he had hardly noticed they had been hit. Specialist motor insurer Service Underwriting reported the claims to the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department of the City of London police.

Once the IFED started to investigate they uncovered a well thought out plan with the intention of defrauding the insurer. Liam Gray, Kevin Hamilton and Ben Carberry had been in contact with each other via social media initially. Carberry booked the coach and the tickets for the dog track, Gray supplied the Megane and Hamilton drove it.

Det Sgt Mark Forster who was in charge of the investigation had this to say, "The fact they were putting lives at risk by causing a crash on a busy road did not hold them back. They wanted an insurer's money and were prepared to go the extra mile to get it. What these men did not count on was IFED and insurers working together to expose criminals who think insurance fraud is an easy way to bolster their bank balance."
