Understanding A2 Licencing Laws

A motorcycle rider has had his insurance claim voided, after it was discovered that he had provided documents that falsely claimed his bike had been restricted to fit A2 Licencing laws.

An A2 licence allows you to ride a bike that makes more than 47bhp, providing that it is restricted - any motorcycle more powerful than 94bhp cannot be restricted down.

In reality the bike in question provided over 100bhp, so was non-A2-compliant even when restricted. A few weeks later the customer returned to the same dealer who fitted the initial restriction, and the dealer subsequently de-restricted it.

The customer still insured the motorcycle, even though he did not hold the correct licence.

The customer signed a disclaimer at the dealership stating he had a full Category A licence and was legally entitled to ride the vehicle away. The manufacturer provided a copy of this disclaimer confirming his fraudulent activity. As a result, his claim was voided.

Fraudulent activity impacts premiums, and takes up valuable time that could otherwise be spent helping true claimants. MCE suggest both motorcycle riders and dealerships take the time to properly understand the licencing laws – they have been introduced for a reason.

The manufacturer subsequently investigated the dealer that fitted (and removed) the restriction kit and further action was taken.
