MCE BSB: Donington Park - Round One - Race One

MCE Insurance Leon Haslam has got his 2017 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship season off to the best start, bagging the opening win of the season and starting his championship campaign off in the very best way.

Shane Byrne was ruled out of the race day action due to a concussion sustained in the morning warm up, leaving a possible 50 points available to anyone willing to take advantage of the reigning champions absence.

It was Ellison that made the best start, ahead of Haslam, Mossey and Brookes - the latter was welcomed back to the championship in style, making contact with Mossey at the Old Hairpin and pushing the Aussie back to ninth place.

Ellison was defending the lead, but the experience of Haslam at the Donington circuit paid off and on the seventh lap of the race he was able to snatch the lead and make it stick, and Mossey was right there to take advantage and go second.

Haslam and Mossey kept the pace and went on to 1-2 finish for the JG Speedfit Kawasaki outfit, however the action was behind them as a number of riders began to battle for the final podium spot. Ellison continued to drop back as Hickman and Iddon overtook with their eyes fixed on the final podium spot. It was to be Iddon's day however, making an attacking move on the Smiths BMW rider, pushing him onto the paint and losing his third place hopes in the process.

Ellison finished fifth, followed by BeWiser Ducati rider Irwin and the returning Brookes. Laverty, Dixon and O'Halloran made up the top ten.
