Statistics released by the Metropolitan Police state that over 9,000 scooters, motorcycles and mopeds were stolen in London in the last year. As a direct consequence of this, many insurers are pricing themselves out of the market, or failing to quote at all.

Data provided by MCE Insurance, one of the only remaining insurers who continue to provide competitive cover in London, reveals that that riders in the Capital are 12 times more likely to report a theft than a Scottish rider.

The statistics show that scooters are twice as likely to be stolen than motorbikes, and of all the models Sports Tourers are the least likely bike to be stolen (even though they are now the average most expensive motorcycles on the road).

Furthermore, new bikes are the most desirable to thieves, with bikes registered within the last 12 months nearly 4 times more likely to be stolen than an older ride.

MCE state that there are some things that can be done to prevent yourbike from being targeted.

o   Park it wisely – if you leave your vehicle somewhere unattended, try and keep it in plain sight - ignore your temptation to park it somewhere quiet. MCE statistics show that on average, car parks are actually riskier than parking on a public road

o   Cover your motorcycle – putting a cover on your bike instantly decreases the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen. It prevents ‘window-shoppers’ from checking out your bike and security set-up

o   Secure your bike – apply your steering lock, use a chain, use a disk-lock. Every obstacle you can put in front of an opportunistic thief will delay/deter them

Commercial Director, Simon French says: “For many, motorcycles are a necessity in the Capital, and we will continue to provide the best two-wheeled insurance option with that in mind.

“We don’t believe riders should be penalised for the actions of others. We want to continue to provide the best policy for the best price, and our customers’ keeping their vehicles as secure as possible will greatly help.”
