Big Eds Blog - The 2017 R6 unveiled

MCE Insurance I don't think I've ever been on a trackday where a Yamaha YZF-R6 has not been present at some point... I love my superbikes, but I must admit there's something about a 600 that just seems to belong around the likes of Cadwell and Oulton Park.

The Yamaha R6 is undeniably one of the modern greats in the class, and when the updated 2017 version was set to be unveiled in America earlier in the month I had high expectations, and I must say they've been met and then some...

First of all, the bike looks like it means business. You can see that Yamaha have borrowed heavily from the R1 and M1 MotoGP bike with that unmistakable headlight display and central air intake - for me, this bike has already hit the ground running (or rolling...?) without even discussing the specs.

Yamaha proclaim an 8% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency compared to their previous model, as well as a comprehensive electronics package much to the delight of the trackday boffins.

It'll have a Traction Control System that will feature a 6-level intervention which will adapt to compensate for tyre wear and to changing conditions. It will also feature a quick shifter which will certainly separate it from the market.

Honda announced earlier in the year they will kill off the CBR600RR at the end of 2016 due to a massive drop in sales and the changing requirements that make it difficult to make the motorcycle road legal. However it appears Yamaha have addressed that factor and will carry on regardless - and quite rightly too when you look at that bike. I can't wait to see what it does, and if anyone has a few quid lying around you know where I am and what I fancy for Christmas!
