Big Eds Blog - Rossi and Marquez make up following tragic weekend
It's been a while since my last blog, I've been keeping busy to say the least.
My last adventure led me to Catalunya for the MotoGP where Rossi and Marquez had an incredible battle and Iannone and Lorenzo had a... racing incident shall we say?
I was at the circuit on the Friday and felt the atmosphere shift as the news circulated that Luis Salom was in a critical condition of which he never recovered and sadly lost his life the same afternoon.
That was hard. That's what I'll take away from the weekend.
The podium finishers all wore 'Always in our hearts' tshirts on the podium in respect for Salom and the small gesture spoke a thousand words as the riders themselves had to come to terms with the news.
It arguably led to Rossi and Marquez burying the proverbial hatchet and actually acknowledging each other's presence, as well as talking openly post-race. It seems schoolboy-ish when I write it down, however to be in that crowd and to see that meant a lot to everyone. It was a realisation that whatever feud they have, whatever feelings they may be holding on to, they aren't the be all and end all.
Rossi's extended hand in the winner's enclosure post-race, in my eyes, was a subtle gesture, which acknowledged the basic fact that life really is too short. They may be rivals and they may have their differences of opinions as they both fight for the win at every opportunity, but they are both united in a shared passion for a sport that pushes the limits on every straight and in every corner.
I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Luis Salom, he will be sorely missed.
