Brookes to make early Assen appearance

MCE Insurance

Josh Brookes seems to have made himself at home on the new Yamaha R1 following a successful round at Brands Hatch in which he managed to bag two first place finishes on the 2015 model. When the MCE British Superbike championship rolls around to Assen in September the Milwaukee Yamaha man will have a notable advantage over his rivals, having been announced as a wildcard in the IDM German Superbike Championship around the Dutch track.

Max Neukirchner and Damian Cudlin are unable to compete due to injury and Brookes will make an appearance at Assen the week following round 7 of the MCE BSB series at Thruxton.

European Superstock 1000 racer Kev Coghlan and MotoAmerica rider Cameron Beaubier will also make wildcard appearances for the Yamaha team at Schleizer Dreieck the week beforehand, before being joined by the Australian rider.

Yamaha Europe's manager Andrea Dosoli said: 'Whilst it's disappointing to have both Yamaha MGM riders out of action with injuries we are happy that they will both make a full recovery and be back on form soon'

With regards to the rider replacements, he said: "In the meantime we are fortunate to have three exceptionally talented Yamaha riders available to step in and fill the gaps. Kev, Josh and Cameron have shown great form so far this season in their classes on the new YZF-R1.

It will be interesting to see how Brookes fairs in Assen, it will undoubtedly give him an advantage over the MCE BSB grid with some extra track time over his rivals. With only 5 points separating him from defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne it is clear that every point matters in the championship, and this may just be the opportunity for Brookes to get some extra track time on the new model and gain an advantage in the championship.
