Decision made for Ducati?
It was announced today that John Hopkins will extend his MCE British Superbike return, following the news that full time rider Jakub Smrz is still healing from his broken thumb sustained at Snetterton last month.
The Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati team knew they had some crucial decisions to make in the lead up to Thruxton, the strong form demonstrated by Hopkins at Brands Hatch as well as the publicity he generated for the team was undeniable. However, Smrz has assisted greatly in the development of the Ducati and the team seem to have a strong bond.
The Czech rider tweeted yesterday: "4 weeks after surgery, all perfect!!!" which is an indication that he feels he is fit to race at Thruxton, however the team seem to be saying different. Team boss Steve Moore said today: "After speaking with Jakub and his medical team today the risk for him riding with such an injury is too high to take. Whilst his hand feels strong now any further damage would cause huge complications for him. So for our local round at Thruxton John will continue on the Ducati. The plan past Thruxton will be finalised soon - we are exploring options now and wish Kuba a strong recovery."
This has fuelled the rumours that Hopkins may stay on for the remainder of the season if he can replicate his Brands Hatch performance at Thruxton, and subsequently prove to the team that he is the man to get the best out of the Panigale.
