The Whiplash battle continues

The group of MP's investigating the size and number of whiplash claims has been told that almost two thirds of them could be exaggerated.

David Powell, manager at Lloyd's Market association, explained that it was easy to make low level whiplash claims due to the "very low and easy medical thresholds" involved. Insurers could pay up to £2,500 for a low level claim.

The select committee also heard from medical experts explaining that whiplash injuries can occur when a car is moving at just 6mph.

Powell added that victims of accidents are encouraged to make whiplash claims by the vast claims management industry that has grown out of the claim culture itself.

The government has started to make changes to the sector but many believe more needs to be done.
